Giorgi Meladze received his law degree from Tbilisi State University and continued his studies through the Public Interest Law Initiative program at Columbia University School of Law in New York. After graduation he worked with Article 19 and the Brennan Center for Justice.
A member of the Liberty Institute since 2000, he works closely with human-rights groups in Georgia and across Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America. He served as an acting member of the advisory committee of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities at the Council of Europe, and as a member of the board of Georgia's Public Broadcaster. In 2005–06 he worked with the EU-supported working group on the reform of legal education in Georgia.
Since 2004 he has taught Media Law, Freedom of Religion, Human Rights, and General Principles of Public Law at state and private universities across Georgia. He joined Ilia State University in 2013, first as Assistant Professor and later as Associate Professor, and directs the university's Center for Constitutional Research.
His research has been supported at various times by the US National Science Foundation, Oslo University, the U.S. State Department, and the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. In 2024 his co-authored chapter on Georgian jury trials received the American Psychology-Law Society's Lawrence S. Wrightsman Book Award.
